Happy Face Salt & Pepper

This was another of mom's salt and pepper sets. A different saying on each side. And what says the 1970's more than a happy face?

Helen Keller's Teacher

This was my sister's book. I can't remember how many times I read it but I am sure I memorized it. I can still remember the story and all the details, it was a really good book.

Halloween Mask

We had a few halloween masks and wore them every year......no fancy costumes for us! We owned a mask like the one on the bottom right....Frankenstein I think it is.

Perfume Bottle

Another bottle of perfume from Avon. This was either my sister's or my mother's, I can't remember. But when I was a child I thought it was pretty.

Mallards

We had 3 mallard ducks like these hanging on the living room wall.

Barbie Furniture

My sister got this for Christmas one year, blow-up Barbie doll furniture. Before this we made furniture out of everything, from pillows to frisbees.

Lord of the Rings

My oldest sister gave me this set of books when I was in high school. I was an avid reader then but I could never get into this series. I loved the set though and kept it on a shelf above my bed.

Mad Game

I think this was my brother's, I remember playing it as a teenager.

Atari

My brother got this game system when I was in high school. We loved it! My sister even broke her toe on the couch running to play the game.

The Un-Candle

I think Mom got these for Christmas one year. We were impressed by them, floating candles on water! It didn't take much to impress us in the 70's.

Birthday Candle Train

This was always in the "junk drawer" in the kitchen in its original box. It was used when we were really young. I'm including a photo of my youngest brother on his 1st birthday. It's a fuzzy photo but you can just make out the birthday candle train on his sailboat cake.

Peachy

We had 2 of these small peach plaques on the kitchen wall above the cupboards. I guess they were made of plaster.

Doctor Dolittle

Another one of my favourite books, I guess I ordered this one from Tab books in elementary school too. Look at the price.....60¢!

Robin

This was my brother's. Can you believe he had a Robin doll that could bend his knees, ankles, elbows and wrists and I never had a Barbie doll that could do that, just the cheap imitation ones with stiff legs and arms. No, I'm not bitter.

Disney Trash Can

This was my younger brothers, Goofy was on one side and Mickey & Donald Duck were on the other. I never had a cool looking trash can in my bedroom.

The Make-Believe Parade

This was my sister's book. I still remember sentences from it (hay foot, straw foot, left foot, right foot).

Monopoly

This was the version we had, with wooden playing pieces. We always wanted to use the one shaped like the milk jug.

Telephone

This was the phone in our hallway. We only had 2 phones in the house, the other one was in my parent's bedroom and was a huge black table top version of this. It wasn't until I was a teenager that my sister and I got small phones for our bedroom, but this phone stayed on the wall.

Ballerina Candle Holders

I remember having these birthday candle holders on my birthday cake several years.

Chinese Fans

My sister and I each had one of these, a pretty similar design too.

Little House on the Prairie

These were among my favourite books when I was in elementary school. So much so that I wanted to live back then in a drafty sod hut on the cold prairie!

Body on Tap Shampoo

Another shampoo I loved as a teenager (this and "Gee Your Hair Smells Teriffic").

Lightbulb Salt & Pepper

Another salt and pepper set that mom had. These were never used but they were among the coolest set she had (in my opinion anyway).

Dick Nolan

This was one of the few records we owned (my parents were not into music). Dick Nolan was a Newfoundland singer and this record included the songs "Aunt Martha's Sheep" and "CN Bus".

Billy Goat Game

Did anyone else have this game? I think ours was all green, not white. First you had to pull the billy goat back and attach a rubber band underneath. Then you started to stack the bricks one by one until the weight was too much and the goat would crash through the bricks. It was fun!

Snoopy Bank

My sister and I each had a Snoopy bank like this. It didn't have an opening in the bottom, though, and mine broke as I was trying to shake coins out of it.

Young Folks Shelf of Books

This set of 10 books came with our enyclopedia set. I didn't read everything in all of the books but some books I read over and over, especially book #6 called "Harvest of Holidays". It told about holidays all over the world. Book #1 was "ABC Go" and had nursery rhymes and other poems.

Spirograph

This was my older sister's and I loved playing with it. We would sit for hours at the kitchen table and make design after design in different colours.

Old Spice

My father always wore Old Spice aftershave. For Christmas a popular gift to give him would be aftershave in a decorative bottle. He saved all the bottles, this was one of them.

Classic Novels

In the early 70's my parents bought a set of encyclopedias from a door-to-door salesman. We were thrilled, we would read the articles and look at the pictures, it was like having our own library. Along with the encyclopedias there were children's books, 2 medical dictionaries and a set of classic novels. They were quite classy looking, gilt edges and leather-look covers. Some of the titles were "Gone With the Wind", "Rebecca", "Lord Jim" and "The Robe". I read some of them when I got older.

Randy Rider

This was my younger sister's doll (she always had the dolls that did stuff, my dolls didn't do anything). Randy Rider came with a bike and she could actually ride the bike. This was amazing for us back in the 70's. My sister blamed me for breaking it, apparently I sat on it and broke the wheel off the bike. But it was under a pile of clothes so it wasn't really my fault!

Building Blocks

These were mine and were very cool. They weren't hard like Legos, they were softer and had little doors and windows that could open.

Typewriter

Dad must have gotten this from work, probably when they were getting rid of them and upgrading. My sister and I kept it in our room on our desk for ages and had lots of fun playing "office" with it.

Nancy Drew Puzzle Book

I had one and my sister had one. I have vivid memories of doing the puzzles in this book while camping in our camper one summer.

Nancy Drew

This was one of the many Nancy Drew books I read, I was hooked on them. I see these days Nancy has been modernized and the books are no longer the classic hard covers with the yellow spine. But I guess when I was reading them in the 70's they had been updated from the 50's and I didn't know that then. I always wanted to be Nancy, she was cool, drove a convertible and wore pumps.

Carousel Lamp

My brother had one of these in his bedroom but it was blue. It was really heavy, the shade was glass, and I am surprised it lasted without getting broke.

Tacky Home Decor

Ah the 70's.....era of tacky home decor. This hung on our living room wall for years. Sometime in the 80's it was banished to the basement.

Baby Tender Love

These "cut-outs" were my younger sister's but of course I played with them as well. I don't think little girls play with paper dolls anymore, but we certainly had fun with them.

Little Women

This was my favourite book when I was a girl and I think it is still my favourite book of all time; I've read it many, many times. My sister owned this copy. I had 3 sisters so I always imagined us as the March girls. My oldest sister would be Meg, then my next oldest sister would be Jo, I would be Beth and my youngest sister would be Amy. I wanted to be Jo, though, she was much more interesting and Beth died, so I wasn't too fond of being that sister!

Ice Cream Maker

We had an electric ice cream maker just like this except ours was white and blue/green. I only remember my parents using it a couple of times. The ice cream was good but not as good as store bought. I'm including a picture of us using the ice cream maker sometime in the late 70's or early 80's.

Moving Car Lamp

This was my aunt's, she lived next door. When we were kids we visited her almost every day. Many times we'd ask her to turn on the car lamp, we were fascintaed by it. After the light heated up a bit, the background would start spinning inside and it looked as if the car were driving down the road. This was before video games and computers, like I said we were fascinated by it!

Blue Mountain Pottery

This swan sat on our living room table. It was kinda cute!

Multiplier

OK, did anyone else have one of these or was I the only geeky child out there? I got it for Christmas when I was in grade 3. I remember bringing it to school for show and tell. You slid the tabs to reveal the answer of the 2 numbers you wanted to multiply. It was pretty neat, considering this was before calculators!

The Aristocats Board Game

This was my younger sister's game. The playing pieces were cardboard cutout cats that stood up in little plastic bases. I don't remember any of the rules or the object of the game.
